History: | The inlet was named Isabel Inlet shortly after opening for the name of the Hurricane that created it. This was a departure from historical naming practice for new inlets on the Outer Banks. Often such an inlet would acquire the name New Inlet for a period of time so as to determine whether it would remain open, then a suitable name would be applied. On September 18th, 2003 Hurricane Isabel at category 2 (formerly category 5) made landfall at Cape Hatteras, and within a matter of hours, a new inlet was cut across Hatteras Island, severing Hatteras Island east northeast of the village of Hatteras, and just over a mile southwest of Frisco.Because of the width, about 1,700 feet with three distinct channels, there was a debate as to whether to bridge the inlet or fill it. The final decision was to fill the inlet, which was completed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on Novemeber 22, 2003. The short-lived inlet was open for two months and four days. |
